KNOWN in Japanese as Akai Ito (literally, red thread), Threads of Destiny tells of soulmates Mei Takemiya and Atsushi Nishino discovering how fate bonds them together.
Directed by Shousuke Murakami, the story revolves around the “red thread of fate” connecting the young pair and the romance that blossoms as well as the trials they face during high school.
Takemiya and Nishino soon discover that they share the same birthday (Feb 29, 1992). Born in a leap year, which means they only get to celebrate their birthday once every four years, Takemiya and Nishino vow to celebrate it together.
But there is a dark side to their destiny, and a shocking revelation from both their pasts compels them to part.
The devastating separation unleashes a wave of misfortune with the young ones having to deal with teen suicide, peer pressure, drug addiction and domestic violence.
As circumstances seek to take control of her life, Takemiya struggles to maintain her faith in the tenuous thread of destiny that will reunite her with her true love.
The movie, adapted from an online novel, was first released as a TV series. Nao Minamisawa plays the wide-eyed Takemiya and Junpei Mizobata plays the gentle Nishino in both the big and small screen versions. Mizobata, 19, said in a press release that he did not feel any difference in the portrayal. “I was thinking both were the same character and interpreted it as such.”
Minamisawa, 18, felt the difference though. “In the movie, there are a lot of changes in time and Mei’s change in feeling that is unwritten, which could be difficult because we had to rely on our own imagination.
“In the TV drama, every single point, even the parts that we imagined, were depicted very clearly, so there were subtle changes in feeling that were kind of hard to express.”
Filming conditions and characterisation posed different challenges to the fresh-faced Japanese stars.
Wakayama-born Mizobata said his character in the movie is totally different from him. “I didn’t experience what Atsushi had, so it was difficult to emote the same feeling. There’s a lot of difference between us, especially since I usually talk a lot while Atsushi is quiet. Yet, his awkwardness and the concern we both feel for our mother is similar.”
For Saitama-born Minamisawa, acting naturally was the biggest challenge. “That’s the part that I cared a lot about. I read and reread the script many times and talked to the director until I could understand Mei’s feelings.
“The similarity between us is we tend to bottle up things that are bothering us. The difference is, no matter what happens, I still want to keep on believing.”
